Acne Scars: Treatment and RecoveryFor individuals dealing with healing severe acne scars treatment has, in the past, been uncomfortable or even painful, and not always successful. This isn't the case today, as long as you're working with a physician who is certified and experienced in cosmetic procedures, specifically acne scar treatments. Before you commit to treatment with any cosmetic surgeon, you'll want to make sure that the surgeon understands your own history with acne and takes the time to determine what type of acne you actually have. While extremely severe types of acne are uncommon, an experienced cosmetic specialist should be familiar with the characteristics of your form of acne, scars, treatment options for that form, as well as the degree of success you can expect from treatment. Acne TypesThankfully, truly severe acne is rare, but there are a few forms that can result in scarring that requires cosmetic treatment to heal properly. The most severe of these forms of acne is Acne Conglobata, which features excessive blackheads and lesions. It is most common in males between the ages of 18 and 30, and usually occurs on the face, back, chest and upper arms. Pyoderma Faciale, which affects only females from about 20 to 40 years of age, is characterized by the sudden onset of large pustules and nodules that can leave behind ugly scars. It comes and goes quickly, but can still damage the skin. Other forms include Acne Fulinans and Gram-Negative Folliculitis, both of which can cause disfiguring scars. While both forms of acne can be treated with Accutane or steroids, the scarring can be addressed with laser acne treatment. If you suspect you may have one of these severe forms of acne, it is important to consult a dermatologist, rather than rely on self-treatment; over-the-counter remedies may be ineffectual and can delay healing. Most severe acne can be effectively treated with prescription drugs such as Accutane, but some require more aggressive treatment to get the condition under control and to address the scarring that results from it. |
